Environmental Development Committee

The Environmental Development Committee (EDC) of The Bhawanipur Education Society College was formed in 2014 with the prime aim of raising awareness and enhancing a sense of responsibility among all students and staff of the institution towards Mother Nature. Over the years, the EDC has remained committed to its goal of promoting environmental consciousness and motivating all to work towards conservation and improvement of the environment and ensuring sustainable development of society at large.

In a world of economic, social, political and ecological interdependence, the committee considers liaison between various disciplines of science, arts and commerce one of its objectives. The committee organises seminars, conferences and lectures, publishes newsletters and bulletins and distributes pamphlets about the repercussions of exploiting natural resources and polluting the environment.

The EDC always encourages research from students and staff and strives to motivate them to find creative solutions to environmental problems.
The committee, with an aim to inculcate environmental ethics and impart practical skills to students to protect the environment, has formed the Nature Club, comprising students from various disciplines. The Nature Club finds innovative ways to conserve nature and improve the environment.

The EDC aims to play a key role as an advisor to the college authorities regarding maintenance of environmental quality and conservation of nature.

It is hereby notified that as per the resolution adopted in the Governing Body Meeting of 21st December 2024, Environmental Development Committee of the college has been reconstituted with effect from the date of notification till further notice. It includes the following members:

  • Responsible for calling meetings and keeping updated minutes, and action taken reports on a monthly basis, and getting it signed by the Head of the Institution.

  • To assist the coordinators in contacting resource persons and making all arrangements for the programmes.

  1. Lecture on “Impact of Climate Change on the Sunderbans” by Dr Sugata Hazra, Jadavpur University on 19.1.2015 – The lecture gave a glaring picture of the sufferings of the inhabitants of Sunderbans turned into environmental refugees due to climate change.
  1. Two-day UGC sponsored National Seminar on “Environmental Awareness: Demand of the Day” on 9.9.2016 and 10.9.2016 – The Committee initiative brought many faculty members and young researchers from various institutions to a common platform to discuss environmental problems and concerns.
  1. Special Lecture on “Art & Environment” by Prof. Chhatrapati Dutta on 20.9.2017 – Art and how it has evolved with the changing environmental conditions was the main theme of the lecture and proved to be very motivating.
  1. Screening of the movie “Erin Brockovich” to commemorate Earth Day on 21.4.2018 – The movie was a great learning experience as a real life event was reflected through it.
  1. Badges made with recycled paper and distributed among all teachers, non-teaching staff and management to commemorate World Environment Day on 5.6.2018 – The initiative proved to be extremely encouraging for the college as all participated in this event.
  1. Special Lecture on Environment and Chemistry by Dr. Chandrakanta Bandopadhyay on 25.3.2019 – The lecture was organized to understand the very important yet complex relationship between Environment and Chemistry.
  1. Special Lecture on Vector Borne Disease by Dr. Chandramouli Bhattacharya and a Skit on 12.4.2019 – Lecture on vector borne diseases and a skit on the same to commemorate the World Health Day which had just glided by on 7.4.2019. The main theme of World Health Day had been “Health for All – Everyone, Everywhere”.
  1. Fight for a Green Environment Celebrating World Earth day on 22.4.2019 – To commemorate this special day, the Committee in collaboration with Rotary Club of Calcutta Victoria and Rotaract Club of Calcutta Victoria, organized a seminar-cum-workshop “Fight for a Green Environment”, where the motto was “Let’s take a step towards making our college a Zero Waste Zone”. The programme included a lecture by Mrs. Lata Bhatia, founder of Green Legion followed by a workshop on composting and creating your own miniature haven, and a competition “From Scrap to Wrap” among the students of the College.
  1. Educational trip to Dooars by the Science Section on 21.02.2020 – The trip was organized by the Science Section and the faculty members of the Environmental Development Committee and many of the students who are members of the Nature Club visited the Bengal Safari.
  1. Online special lecture on “Environment and Climate Concerns: Rethinking Education Strategies” by Dr. Duke Ghosh on 05.06.2020–  To mark the occasion of World Environment Day, the speaker Dr Duke Ghosh, Fellow of The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders‟ Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) elaborated on the various impacts of climate change especially concentrating on the economy of the world.
  1. National Webinar on “Addressing the issues of Climate Change and Vector Borne Diseases like Dengue” by Mr. Ajay Mittal on 22.08.2020- The Committee and the Department of Sociology organized a special lecture on vector borne diseases.
  1. Earth Day Celebrations on 22.04.2022 – The Committee in collaboration with the Department of Film Studies organized a debate competition to commemorate the occasion of Earth Day.
  1. Earth Day Celebrations on 22.04.2023 – The Committee organized a series of interesting events for the students to commemorate the day.  The events were “Best of Waste” (Installation Art), Short Film Making Competition and Debate Competition.
  1. Educational trip to Darjeeling by the Department of Economics on 01.06.2023 to 05.06.2023- The teachers and students of the Department of Economics and members of the Nature Club commemorated World Environment Day with a marked sense of environmental awareness. One of the highlights in the trip was the visit to the Bose Institute where students were excited to come across two instruments which are used to measure the level of pollution in the air.

  1. Creation of awareness about the Natural Environment through various programs that concern nature, natural resources and issues that have an adverse impact on the environment.
  2. Active participation of the members of the institution- both students and teachers, to adhere to certain principles that help in the protection of the environment.
  3. Reduction of individual carbon footprint of members of the institution over time through awareness generation.
